Q. Do your videos show just some of the steps and not everything needed to complete my project?

  • A: Each video will take you step by step from start to finish. Some of my viewers have described it as "watching over Jason's shoulder as he is tiling".

Q. I need to tile my tub surround. How come you don't have a video for that?

  • A: I will most likely make a new video for tiling a tub surround in the near future. In the meantime, I would recommend the How To Tile A Shower Video. I use the same steps in starting the first row of tile whether it's the top of the tub or shower pan. Both projects need to be cut-in if they are out of level. After that, they are identical.

Q. How can I be sure that your methods will work for me and produce a high quality job?

  • A: As a current licensed Tile Contractor (C-54) for the State of California, with over 20 years of experience who was selected as a participant for updating the 2011 Tile (C-54) California State Exam, I believe to be well qualified and able to educate all aspects of tile installations.

TILE AND GROUT FAQ'S

Q. I am looking for a Tile Contractor in my area who specializes in tile and grout repair. Where Should I look?

Q. What would make the shower leak? It appears the job was done well?

  • A: There are several ways a shower could leak.
  • The waterproofing material may have developed a crack or opening at the shower pan.
The shower enclosure may not be properly caulked with silicone.
  • Possible plumbing leak.

Q. When do you want to use a "sanded grout" as opposed to "non-sanded grout"?

  • A: I like to use "sanded grout" for joints 1/8" or larger and "unsanded grout" for joints 1/16" and smaller.

Q. Can I use bleach to clean my white grout?

  • A: NO! bleach will destroy the cement content in grout. Use a grout specific cleaner that is ph balanced available at hardware/home improvement stores.

Q. Will grout sealer water proof my grout?

  • A: No. grout sealer will not water proof grout. It will help prevent staining caused by oils and acidic liquids if wiped up promptly.

Q. What is the difference between "modified" and "unmodified" thinset?

  • A: Modified thinsets will generally create a stronger bond with substrates such as drywall, concrete and wood. Unmodified Thinsets work great for installing tile to Schluter Kerdi and Schluter Ditra Mat. All available videos will explain which ones to use and where.

Q. How can I make my shower last longer?

  • A: Use a squeegee on your glass enclosure every time! Dry your tile walls and floor with your towel for maximum results!

Q. Is tile backer board waterproof?

  • A: Not all types of backer board are waterproof. The most common brand, Hardie Backer Board, is not waterproof, but is a great product! Even if it is water proof, you still need to protect all the seams including nail/screw fasteners used during installation. I currently use Hardie Backer Board. I also recommend and use Schluter's Shower System which provides a water proof/vapor proof barrier and works great! I can offer a 5 year factory warranty to my customers... not the standard 1 year warranty that most tile contractors offer!

Q. Would you say that the prefab white plastic shower pans are better than vinyl pan liners for less chance of leaking?

  • A: I would say that either one would work and can/should last for years if it was installed correctly. I no longer use "Vinyl Pan Liners" for waterproofing. I use a shower kit available from Schluter.com which out performs ANY type of shower floor hands down! The biggest advantage is how fast the shower pan dries between uses which results in the elimination of mildew often seen at the bottom of showers!
